INTRODUCTION

We love it when a software provider manages to pull off a good horror atmosphere in a slot game. NoLimit City is the unofficial king of this, but Hacksaw Gaming has definitely been known to put together a solidly spooky slot.

They’re definitely pulling out the big guns when it comes to presentation with Evil Eyes, though. The game sports some very high-end graphics and an appropriately unsettling soundtrack. As you may have gathered, this game is all about things that go bump in the night. It puts you in the middle of a mist-covered graveyard in the middle of the woods. If that weren’t enough, a supernatural creature of some sort is always to the side of the reels, giving you the Evil Eye.

Graphics aside, though, this game is also completely off the cuff when it comes to gameplay. With two bonus rounds and some downright insane features, it’s an endlessly creative title – so much so that we don’t really have anything to compare it to. If that sounds like something you might want to give a shot, this review will tell you everything you need to know.

HOW TO PLAY EVIL EYES SLOTS

The base game of Evil Eyes is fairly tame compared to the many bonus features we’ll get to in a bit. It’s a fairly standard type of setup – you need to hit three or more matching symbols on 3 or more adjacent reels going from left to right. Additional symbols increase payouts. Having additional symbols on the same reels also counts, but you still need at least 3 reels to get a win.

That said, the game board is a bit unorthodox with 5 reels and 5 rows. This square-shaped game grid allows for a grand total of 3,125 ways to win. It offers a hit rate of just under 30%, which are interesting slot odds for such a volatile title.

Now that we got the basics out of the way, we’ll dive into the various unique mechanics the Evil Eye slot game offers.

Evil Eyes

The game’s namesake symbols are quite an interesting invention.

If an Evil Eye symbol lands below a winning symbol, it triggers something called an Evil Spread. Basically, it will turn and look either down or to the right. All symbols to the right/down of the winning symbols will turn into new instances of the winning symbol, thereby increasing your payout. Note that even the Evil Eye symbols can be turned into regular symbols this way.

The Evil Eye can only ever appear on reel 3.

Wicked Night Bonus

If three FS symbols land anywhere on the grid, the Wicked Night bonus is triggered.

This minigame fundamentally works as a sort of Hold & Win feature. During this mode, only non-paying, Evil Eye, and multiplier symbols can appear. You get 3 free spins initially, and this number resets back to 3 every time you get any sort of win in the bonus round. If you string together 3 spins with no wins, the bonus round ends.

Every time an Evil Eye lands in this mode, it will gaze to the left, right, up, or down. If it seems any multipliers in that direction, the multipliers are collected above the reels and the spin counter resets back to 3.

If the Evil Eye “sees” another Evil Eye this way, a random multiplier is added above every reel. Basically, it’s as if you hit five random multiplier symbols.

The multiplier symbols themselves can show 1 to 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, or 100x.

There are also special red multipliers, which multiply the accumulated multiplier on one reel. THey’re collected the same way the normal ones are.

Once you lose 3 times in a row, the round ends. All of the multipliers above the reels are added together and awarded as an instant payout.

The Graveyard Bonus

If you hit four FS symbols in a single base game spin, you trigger the Graveyard bonus round.

This is a more standard kind of free spin round. You get 10 spins to start you off. Hitting two FS symbols during this round will grant you 2 additional spins, while landing three awards 4 more spins.

Evil Eyes appear a lot more frequently during free spins. The game’s info panel doesn’t say that, but our experience is that there’s a lot more of them. Whenever a low-paying symbol triggers the Evil Spread feature during free spins, that type of symbol is removed from any future spins until the Graveyard bonus round ends.

FeatureSpins and Feature Buy

The Feature Buy button in this game holds quite a few options.

  • Bonushunt Featurespins is a special betting option that basically triples your bet without increasing the payouts. However, it increases the chances of FS symbols appearing by 5 times.
  • I Spy With My Little Eye basically gives you a single spin from the Wicked Night bonus round for the price of 50x the stake. In this spin, 3 Evil Eyes and 4 Multipliers are guaranteed to appear, though you’ll probably get a lot more than that. In our experience, this option is very rarely worth the 50x asking price.
  • An Eye for an Evil Eye guarantees that an Evil Spread feature will trigger for 50x. THis means that you’re sure to get at least one win and an Evil Eye right below it. Though this option doesn’t have the same potential for a massive reward like I Spy With My Little Eye, we’ve found it to be a lot more consistent in its returns. You have a decent shot at making back the 50x at the very least.
  • You can also instantly buy the Wicked Night feature for 100x.
  • Instantly triggering the Graveyard costs 200x.

Casino Bloke Best tips for Evil Eyes Slot

  • 1If you’re enjoying the Wicked Night feature, buying 3 spins ( and potentially a lot more) makes a lot more sense than buying a single one with I Spy With My Little Eye. We’ve also found it to be a lot more consistently profitable.
  • 2For better or worse, none of the Feature Buy options affect the game’s RTP. At least that’s what the in-game info panel tells us.
  • 3However, Hacksaw Gaming have been known to implement RTP ranges into their games, which means there are different variants with different RTP rates depending on the casino. Take care you only play the version with 96.23% RTP.

PAYOUTS & RTP

Evil Eyes features five low-paying symbols and five high-paying icons. Well, “high-paying”.

The low-paying symbols are all the same in terms of value, paying 0.1x, 0.3x, or 0.5x for 3/4/5 symbols on a line. Note that they can pay a lot more since you can hit a lot more than 5 symbols in a winning combination.

High-paying symbols are more varied in their value, but they all follow this trend of generally low returns. The point of this game is to hit a lot more than just 5 symbols, especially when you factor in the Evil Spread mechanic. The paytable doesn’t really tell us much in that regard.

That said, the 96.23% RTP of the Evil Eyes online slot is quite respectable, clocking higher than most other games of this type.

what we like

  • Fun, creative feateurs related to the Evil Eyes
  • Multiple ways to control your experience through Feature Spins and Feature Buy
  • Above-average RTP
  • High maximum payout

what we don’t like

  • Evil Eyes very rarely appear during the base game
  • Some Feature Spins and Feature Buy options are clearly not worth it

EVIL EYES BY HACKSAW GAMING – CASINO BLOKE’S VERDICT

We genuinely enjoyed a lot of what this game has to offer. We always welcome creativity with open arms, and this game has creativity in spades. However, it’s a bit of a mixed bag at times.

For example, it sometimes feels like it was meant to be played with the various Feature Spins and Feature Buy options. The Evil Eyes, which are so crucial for everything this game tries to do, are exceedingly rare in the base game. Surprisingly rare. We’ve spent quite a bit of time with it, and we only ever saw the Evil Spread feature a handful of times – at least unless you make it trigger with the Bonus Buy button.

It all lends itself to a strange experience. Hacksaw Gaming’s Evil Eyes has a lot to offer, but players looking to just spin some good old slots probably won’t have the best time. If you approach it with an open mind, though, it’s a masterclass in creativity.
