INTRODUCTION

Play’n Go made a big mark with their 2018 cluster pay slot Reactoonz. Since then, they’ve been trying to catch lightning in a bottle with several sequels, including Reactoonz 2 and Dr. Toonz. However, these releases failed to live up to the expectations set by the innovative original. Instead of building on the idea, they seemed like a step backward in many ways. Both failed to impress critics and audiences, leading to a lukewarm impression at best.

The Gigantoonz slot takes the ideas we saw in Reactoonz and bumps them up a notch. With a bigger grid, bigger payouts, and even more volatility, it already seems like a more promising attempt to re-capture the magic. The memorable Toonz are back, and so are the cascading game engine, crazy Quantum Wild features, and more. Is this title the Reactoonz update we’ve been waiting for? Our Gigantoonz review is here to find out!

HOW TO PLAY GIGANTOONZ

The original slot is considered to be one of the best grid slots of all time, so it’s no surprise that that’s the key mechanic here. To the uninitiated, Gigantoonz works through a mechanic called Cluster Pays. Unlike classic reels and rows, you’re not trying to arrange winning lines. Instead, your goal in Gigantoonz is to create clusters of symbols. This means that identical symbols can be connected both vertically and horizontally across the 8×8 grid. However, you need at least 6 matching symbols to secure a payout.

All of this results in fairly unique gameplay. When you play Gigantoonz slots, the experience occasionally feels like a puzzle game in the vein of Candy Crush. The strong graphics and cartoony aliens only add to this feeling.

Needless to say, the volatility of Gigantoonz is off the charts. Any winning symbols explode and make way for new ones to tumble down from the top of the grid. Like with most such slot games, this can result in huge winning streaks. On the flip side, individual payouts are relatively limited.

On top of all that, the defining feature of this series is the Mega Symbols. These are the big symbols, which can cover anywhere from 2×2 to 7×7 positions on the grid. A Mega Symbol counts as a single symbol for the purposes of making winning combinations. However, it pays at a highly increased rate, as determined by its Cluster Value. This value is determined randomly the moment the Mega Symbol appears.

Casino Bloke Best tips for Gigantoonz Slot

  • 1Mega Symbols can also cascade down the grid. If it is unable to due to smaller symbols below it, any empty grid positions are filled with small versions of the Mega. Creating winning clusters around Mega Symbols is much easier thanks to this mechanic.
  • 2Although Mega Symbols count as one for creating clusters, they still make things a lot easier. A larger symbol connects to a potentially large number of smaller ones and can act as a bridge crossing huge parts of the game’s grid.
  • 3The Cluster Value of a symbol is not necessarily tied to its size. However, every possible symbol size seems to have a range of values that can be assigned to it. That’s why you’ll never see a 7×7 symbol with a 2x value, or vice versa.

PAYOUTS

The Gigantoonz are the little aliens that act as regular symbols in this game. There are 8 of them in total, not counting the Gargantoon Wild. They are generally divided into low, medium, and high-paying ones.

Gigantoonz by Play’n Go is extremely volatile, but that doesn’t mean the game’s hit rate is particularly low. Instead, most common winning clusters have fairly low payouts. More often than not, they will barely be enough to break even with the stake. However, once you get the cascades rolling and special features setting off, you can win staggering amounts fairly quickly.

Gigantoonz RTP sits at a comfortable 96.20%. While this return-to-player rate can’t be called poor, it seems like an unnecessary step back from the original Reactoonz.

what we like

  • Large grid with a decent hit rate
  • Exciting, explosive special features that can quickly turn the tide of your game
  • Colourful theme with a lot of personality

what we don’t like

  • Disappointing base payouts
  • Not enough changes over the original Reactoonz

GIGANTOONZ (PLAY’N GO): CASINO BLOKE’S VERDICT

We can’t say that we’re not glad to see the ‘Toonz back for another go. The original game proudly sits on our Top 10 slot games list as arguably the best cluster/grid slot ever made.

Play’n Go decided to make the whole thing bigger and bolder, most notably with larger Mega Symbols and a more expansive grid. That’s all fine and dandy, but the improvements over the original end there. It seems that the issues of the previous Reactoonz sequels made Play’n Go afraid to truly innovate on the formula. There simply isn’t enough new content to set Gigantoonz apart as anything more than Reactoonz with an extra row.

To be frank, though, the result is still an excellent game. If we could see Gigantoonz in a complete vacuum, it would be a chart-topping hit. As it stands, it’s just a pleasant throwback to the amazing game Play’n Go made a few years ago.
