ABOUT DEVOUR THE WEAK SLOTS
Every few years or so, Yggdrasil likes to take us on a journey to the underworld. It started back with Lilith’s Inferno, but the idea of hells and demons has since produced some of the best slots in the Yggdrasil portfolio such as Hades and the incredible Champion of the Underworld. Every time we go on a trip down under with Yggdrasil, it turns out to be an unforgettable experience, so you can see why we were so excited once another demonic slot was announced.
With a name like Devour the Weak, you just know we’re in for something special. As soon as you launch the game for the first time, you’ll also know that it doesn’t disappoint. The stunning art and style is nothing new with Yggdrasil, but we’re always glad to see it. Moreover, the game’s defining feature is outlined in the name – it’s all about ‘devouring’ low-paying symbols in order to make room for bigger and better things.
Immersive graphics are great and all, but how does the Devour the Weak slot work in action? Let’s find out!
HOW TO PLAY DEVOUR THE WEAK
The base game is fairly straightforward. It’s played on a classic 5×3 board populated by various demons, imps, and other denizens of the pit.
Your goal, as always, is to match 3 or more identical symbols in an uninterrupted line going from left to right. All winning combinations start at the leftmost reel. On the bright side, you don’t have to worry about paylines or anything like that. It doesn’t matter which row the matched symbols appear on as long as they form an uninterrupted line.
Avalanche – Devouring Weak Symbols
Devour the Weak crucially also features Tumbling symbols. This means that any winning symbols are removed from the table and new ones tumble down from the top of the table to replace them. This makes room to hit more winning lines and win more money.
However, even more importantly, Devour the Weak has a special mechanic related to tumbling symbols. Not only are the winning symbols removed, but all other symbols of an equal or lesser value also disappear. That’s what ‘devouring the weak’ means in this case, and it’s a truly unique and fun mechanic.
Every time you remove or devour a symbol, a point is added to the multiplier counter on the right. For every 6 points the multiplier increases, up to 666x (of course.) The multiplier counter (and the removed symbols) are all reset once you hit ‘Spin’ again.
Hexed Symbols & Free Spins
Standard symbols occasionally appear with a purple orb. These are called Hexed symbols. Whenever a winning hexed symbol is removed, it transforms into a Wild and adds +1 to the Free Spins counter.
It takes 6 Hexed Symbols to trigger the free spins in Devour the Weak slots. The counter is reset every time you hit spin, you’ll need 6 Hexed symbols in a single spin sequence to get the bonus round.
Once you do, you’ll be awarded 10 free spins, plus an additional spin for every 1 Hexed symbol beyond 6.
During free spins, all Hexed symbols instantly turn into Wilds as soon as they hit the table. Moreover, the multiplier counter resets to 6x instead of 1x with every spin, significantly increasing overall returns.
It’s also worth mentioning that you can buy the free spin feature in Devour the Weak. 100x the stake grants 10-13 free spins with an x6 multiplier, while 666x the bet buys 14-17 free spins with a multiplier that starts at 33x.
Casino Bloke Best tips for Devour the Weak Slot
- 1Devour the Weak is an extremely volatile game, so don’t expect to win too much on every spin.
- 2The whole idea is to string together lots of small wins through the Avalanche feature. This doesn’t happen too often, though, so mind your bankroll.
- 3Buying the Free Spin feature is a viable way to approach the game, though it doesn’t offer any advantage in terms of RTP like purchasing features sometimes does
PAYOUTS & RTP
As is often the case with Yggdrasil releases, Devour the Weak is extremely volatile. Even the (relatively) high-paying monster symbols barely cover the initial stake, and 3-symbol lines are not particularly profitable.
As you may have guessed, the whole idea is to devour lots and lots of small symbols. Getting lucky with a few Avalanche triggers will clear the board several times over and result in multiple large wins because only high-paying symbols are left on the board. Throw in the rapidly-growing multipliers, and a single spin can be quite powerful in a game like this. Don’t expect to see such a scenario too often, though.
All of this combines for an RTP rate of 96%, which is exactly around the average for the industry.
what we like
- Stunning Graphics
- Unique Avalanche feature which can lead to huge wins
- Customizable feature buy
- Huge multipliers, especially during free spins
what we don’t like
- Extreme volatility is not everyone’s cup of tea
- Very small base payouts
OUR VERDICT
We’re not shy about our love of Yggdrasil slots, but Devour the Weak should be approached with care. The provider rates it as a ‘super volatile’ game, and they’re not wrong. We recommend trying to play Devour the Weak for free before switching to real money. Try to get a feel for the huge variance before investing your hard-earned cash.
However, considering that that’s exactly what Yggdrasil was going for, we can call this new title a great success. It achieves what it set out to do, and does so in style. It’s an extremely engaging and fun game to play if you know what you’re getting into – and if you’re prepared for a little frustration. It’s all part of the high-risk, high-reward nature of the game.
