ABOUT GRIM THE SPLITTER

Ready to dig into the mystical card deck of Grim the Splitter? Well, you have at least two different ways of doing so, which is what we’ll explain before we go any further with this review.

There are two versions of this slot game available: Grim the Splitter and Grim the Splitter: Dream Drop. The difference is fairly straightforward – the former is just your typical online slot with a 10,000x max payout. The Dream Drop version, however, gives you access to a progressive jackpot. Although subtle at first, the differences are very impactful for how the game works.

Specifically, Grim the Splitter and the Dream Drop version have different math models. The non-progressive variant has higher RTP and better hit frequency. Obviously, though, Dream Drop is the only way to access the juicy progressive jackpot. The Mega jackpot can grow all the way to €6 million (!), so the drop in RTP is there for a reason.

Before we dive into how Grim the Splitter works, we should note the interesting graphics and presentation. The slot is presented as a card game played against the titular Grim with different cards acting as symbols. The visuals have a hand-drawn look to them, which all adds up to unique and interesting graphics. It’s a great-looking game, and some of the features make it even more appealing.

HOW TO PLAY GRIM THE SPLITTER

The base gameplay is classic online slot fare. You have a 5×4 board with 25 fixed paylines. Match three or more symbols along these paylines and you get a payout.

However, once Grim the Splitter wilds are introduced, things get a lot more complicated. Not only do they act as regular Wild symbols, but they also split any reel they appear in into two. Hence the name ‘the Splitter.’ This duplicates all of the symbols on the affected reel, including the Wild itself.

Any reel can be split during regular gameplay. However, this can happen only once per reel, so you can theoretically have up to 10 reels with a normal spin. Note that split symbols count as two separate symbols for the purposes of calculating wins. Essentially, this allows you to make combinations of more than 5 symbols per winning line, which is quite neat. However, any split symbols still count as only one position in terms of how the paylines work. Thankfully, any split symbols just appear as stacked cards, so there isn’t any confusion about the paylines.

GRIM THE SPLITTER FREE SPINS

Just like many modern slot games, this Relax Gaming title comes with a free spin feature. To trigger it, you have to hit at least 3 Bonus symbols. Bonus symbols act as a Scatter, so they don’t have to be arranged along paylines. You get 7 free spins for three Bonus symbols with one additional spin for every symbol beyond that.

Grim the Splitter free spins are also quite powerful for several reasons:

  • The triggering bonus symbols are stored above the reels and can be retriggered by future wilds.
  • Landing a Bonus symbol awards +1 free spins, and splitting them further awards +1 free spin per split symbol.
  • Any reels split using Wilds are persistent, which means they stay split until the free spin round ends.
  • Reels can be split up to 3 times this way, which means it’s possible to win with up to 20 symbols per line.

All of this adds up to a very profitable feature. Too bad it’s quite hard to trigger.

DREAM DROP PROGRESSIVE FEATURE

If you opt to play Grim the Splitter Dream Drop, you have a chance to trigger the Dream Drop bonus round. Revealing 5 special Dream Drop symbols before any regular spin is the only way to do so. In practice, this means that the bonus triggers randomly during gameplay.

The progressive bonus round is essentially a Pick & Click feature. You will see 15 hidden symbols instead of the usual wheels. Different jackpots are randomly distributed to all 15 positions. Your job is to pick these symbols until you get three of the same kind. There are 5 possible outcomes and 5 possible jackpots: RAPID, MIDI, MAXI, MAJOR, and MEGA.

12% of every bet in Grim the Splitter goes toward increasing the jackpot. Note that the Dream Drop jackpots are shared with other Relax Gaming slots that use it, such as Neko Night and Santa’s Stack.

Casino Bloke Best tips for Grim the Splitter Slot

  • 1The non-progressive version of Grim the Splitter has more than 2% more RTP. Take care to understand which version of the game you’re playing.
  • 2That said, the 94% RTP calculation in the progressive version does not take into account the jackpot.
  • 3As with most progressive slots, it’s better to play the game after the Jackpots have been given time to grow. This doesn’t matter as much for the smaller prizes because they are awarded every few hours anyway. However, the MEGA jackpot can vary greatly in size.

GRIM THE SPLITTER RTP AND PAYOUTS

As noted above, the Splitting feature of this game has some interesting effects on the payout structure. If no Wilds are present, the game works like most online slots. You need 3 matching symbols to win, but getting 4 or 5 in a line substantially improves the rewards.

However, all of the symbols can be split into two (though you will rarely see more than 1 or 2 splits during normal spins.) This brings the maximum number of symbols per winning line to a whopping 10 during normal spins and 20 during free spins. To illustrate how impactful that is, five-of-a-kind wins range from 4 to 25 times the stake depending on the symbol. 20 matching symbols in a line win 120 to 750 times the stake, though.

Grim the Splitter RTP sits at 96.15% for the non-progressive version, which is quite strong.

The progressive Dream Drops variant instead offers 94%.

what we like

  • Interesting presentation and crisp graphics
  • Impactful reel-splitting mechanics with Wilds
  • Very profitable free spins round
  • Progressive and non-progressive versions available

what we don’t like

  • Dream Drops variant has sub-par RTP
  • Free Spins are very hard to hit

GRIM THE SPLITTER BY RELAX GAMING – OUR VERDICT

Our initial impressions of the Grim the Splitter slot were quite positive. That impression lasted throughout our time with the game, barring a few exceptions.

Let’s start with the good. The graphics, tone, and soundtrack of the title lend to a very atmospheric experience and you’ll enjoy playing it. In terms of mechanics, the Wild splitting is a very interesting idea that was masterfully executed. Grim the Splitter truly shines when these solid ideas are compounded by the profitable free spins round.

The negatives are mostly related to the progressive features, sadly. First of all, the whole bonus round feels very detached from the rest of the game. It’s not part of the core mechanics – you just occasionally get a “you win!” screen without looking for it or earning it. And while it’s understandable that a progressive jackpot decreases the RTP, the way that it affects hit frequency makes for a very different experience compared to the non-progressive game. This may have something to do with the fact that the game itself is extremely volatile.

We can safely recommend the non-progressive version of the game to just about anyone. If you want to play Grim the Splitter Dream Drops, though, make sure you understand what you’re getting into. The earnings will be quite poor for everyone but the luckiest of players.

SIMILAR GAMES

The Wild Splitting of this game is a fairly unique idea, so there aren’t many competitors we can compare it to. Especially considering how crucial they are to the whole concept. That said, we can point you to a few similar titles if you’re looking for an alternative.

  • Neko Night is perhaps the most similar slot to Grim in terms of the Relax Gaming portfolio. It’s played with similar rules and also has access to the Dream Drop jackpots.
  • 3 Secret Cities from 4ThePlayer is an absolute joy to play with interesting features, some of which remind us of the pick & click in Grim the Splitter.
  • Immortal Romance: Mega Moolah combines two online slot legends into one big spectacle. It’s worth a look if you want volatile progressive games.
  • Champion of the Underworld is a recent Yggdrasil release with plenty of variance and a similar vibe.

Grim the Splitter can attract all sorts of players, though. The key factor is that you don’t mind a lot of volatility. If you’re really feeling brave, though, the progressive feature is an interesting option.
