ABOUT SCATTER MONSTERS
The gates of Hell have opened in Quickspin’s recent release, and the servants of the abyss gather for their latest infernal plot: a music festival! That should give you an idea of the kind of vibe this game is going for. It deals with demons, zombies, and vampires that seem to have gathered for a music festival of some sort. We’re not sure whether this is some sort of statement about festivals from Quickspin, but it’s good fun either way.
More interestingly, the Scatter Monsters slot game does not work like most typical online slots. It does not have paylines in the usual sense of the word. Most symbols can pay anywhere on the table, as long as you hit enough of them. It all adds up to a fairly interesting game, though we can’t honestly say we haven’t seen anything like this before. Still, it can be a nice break from the monotony of always worrying about how your symbols have been arranged.
That’s not all Scatter Monsters by Quickspin has to offer, though. There are quite a few features and surprises under the hood, so let’s get to it.
HOW TO PLAY SCATTER MONSTERS
The most important part of Scatter Monsters slots is understanding that it’s not a typical reel-based machine.
Instead, symbols can pay pretty much anywhere on the 6×6 game table. The only goal is to get 8 or more symbols of the same type. Additionally, any winning symbols are removed from the game and new ones tumble down from the top to replace them. This can happen multiple times after you’ve only hit spin once.
Note that the payouts in this game rely heavily on the number of matching symbols you get in a single combination. The maximum number is 36. As always, better symbols end up giving bigger prizes.
SOUL METERS
Symbols in Scatter Monsters are also divided into three groups – vampires, zombies, and demons. Each type has three kinds of symbols – a small and cute one, a medium-sized one that looks slightly annoyed, and a big angry one.
This matters because matcing a certain type of symbol will fill out one of the three meters on the side of the screen. Each symbol that’s part of a winning symbol fills out the meter by 1 point. Once you completely fill the meter, one of three special features is triggered.
- The Vampire soul meter is purple and requires 20 souls to fill. Once you do, all small symbols of all types are turned into a bigger and better version. If there are no small symbols on the screen, medium symbols are upgraded instead. Can be triggered multiple times.
- The Zombie soul meter is green and takes 40 souls to fill completely. It causes all symbols of a randomly selected colour to be removed from the game, filling the related soul meter in the process. You have a good chance of making more winning combinations once this happens.
- The Demon soul meter is red and needs 60 souls. Filling it out awards 8 free spins. You also get +1 free spin for every 25 souls over the initial 60. During Scatter Monsters free spinms, every 60 demon souls also award you an additional spin. Any remaining souls are converted into a multiplier for that spin, ranging from 1x to 10x.
Importantly, the meters reset every time you hit spin. In essence, you’re hoping to fill them out using the tumble feature.
SPECIAL SYMBOLS
The game also comes with two special types of symbols you can encounter at any point. These are:
- Wilds can substitute any other type of symbol except Heaven’s Gift. They look like a big golden pentagram, and the fact that they don’t need paylines makes them especially useful.
- Heaven’s Gift symbols give 10 to 50 souls to one randomly-selected meter. This special symbol can also appear during free spins.
Casino Bloke Best tips for Scatter Monsters Slot
- 1By and large, a single win in Scatter Monsters won’t pay all that much. However, they happen relatively often.
- 2The best way to win big in this game is to string together multiple wins after hitting only one spin. Remember – you only pay the stake once regardless of how many times the symbols tumble down. That’s what makes the Zombie soul meter so useful.
SCATTER MONSTERS RTP AND PAYOUTS
On top of being divided into vampires, zombies, and demons, all symbols in this game are divided by size. For instance, there is a small zombie, a medium zombie, and a large zombie. Note that each of these counts as a separate symbol.
In terms of payouts, vampires are generally the weakest type of symbol. Zombies are a bit better, while the highest payouts in any given size are reserved for demons. In other words, the small vampire is the weakest symbol, while the Grand Demon is the highest-paying one.
When you play Scatter Monster for real money, the number of symbols in a single winning combination determines the total payout. However, prizes are ‘grouped’ in ranges of 3-4 symbols. Here are the prize ranges, going from smallest to biggest:
- 8-9
- 10-12
- 13-15
- 16-20
- 21-25
- 26-36
This functionally means that getting 26 symbols is enough for the biggest prize for that symbol.
Scatter Monster RTP sits at 96.08%. We’re glad the maths worked out for Quickspin – sometimes, developers use interesting gameplay like here to hide sub-par house edge ratings. Good to see that isn’t the case here.
what we like
- Atypical Pay Anywhere system
- Theoretically unlimited wins per single spin
- The way the Soul Meters works allow special features to trigger often
what we don’t like
- The way payouts are grouped based on the number of symbols is strange
SCATTER MONSTERS BY QUICKSPIN – OUR VERDICT
Scatter Monsters ended up being a strange beast – no pun intended. The small per-win payouts and relatively low maximum payout made us expect a tame, nonvolatile game with a trickle of smaller victories. That wasn’t really the case, though.
Instead, playing this game feels like an uphill battle at most times. You’re not winning much, and when you do win the prizes are unimpressive. The trick, it seems, is that you need to be lucky enough to tumble into multiple wins in a single round. The RTP indicates that this model is decently strong, but we’re not quite sure how players will react to it.
Still, if you want to try something a bit “out there”, Quickspin Scatter Monsters is an interesting choice. It’s not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination – we just think that a small rebalance in the math model would incentivise players to keep coming back for more.
SIMILAR GAMES
Quickspin is by no means the first software provider to experiment with a Pay Anywhere model. While the final product still plays and feels rather unique, there are some comparable titles out there for you to sink your teeth into.
- Reactoonz by Play’n GO is one of the most famous examples of atypically structured slots. It focuses more on grouping symbols into clusters, but it also involves meters for players to fill.
- Sizzling Moon™ also has a Pay Anywhere system, though it’s functionally very different than the one in Scatter Monsters. Still, it’s a fascinating game in many ways, especially if you want to break the mould of typical slot machines.
- Sticky Bandits is another experimental Quickspin release. Where Scatter Monsters focuses on Scatters, Sticky Bandits focuses on, well, sticky symbols.
- The Big Bad Wolf is the highest-RTP game Quickspin has released to date. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something more ‘classic’.
All in all, Scatter Monsters is quite clearly a very unique experience. If nothing else, the theme is quite gripping, and we can definitely see some of you absolutely loving it.
