INTRODUCTION
Some casino software providers never fail to surprise us with the kind of inspiration they find when making online slots. American Diner is one such creative game, and it’s largely distinguished by its memorable theme over any innovative mechanics or features.
American Diner by Dragon Gaming features iconic imagery inspired by various ‘50s Americana. Specifically, it takes you to a stylised diner, complete with jukeboxes, rollerblades, and a plethora of heart-attack-inducing fried foods.
The game gets a lot of points for style if nothing else. The attention to detail is quite fascinating. We especially admire the custom-made user interface – not all companies go to the same lengths to make things authentic.
We’ll say right off the bat, though – mechanically, the game is quite simple. Still, if you want to experience the sights and sounds of a ‘50s diner and maybe win some cash while you’re at it, keep reading our American Diner slot review.
HOW TO PLAY AMERICAN DINER
This title isn’t made just for fans of classic diners. It’s also made for fans of classic slot machines. Its simple design and familiar mechanics allow it to be accessible even to complete beginners. Moreover, playing American Diner is quite relaxing because you don’t need to keep track of different things.
To elaborate, American Diner is played on a simple 5×3 board with just 10 active paylines. This means that the game is more volatile than one would expect, but it’s also quite easy to see when, why, and how you’ve won (or haven’t won.)
All you have to do is try to get 3 or more matching symbols along one of the paylines. Wins are only calculated from left to right, starting at the leftmost reel. Just hit the big shiny ‘Spin’ button in the middle and enjoy the show.
Alternatively, you can set up the autoplay feature and save some time and energy by not having to push the button yourself.
Casino Bloke Best tips for The American Diner Slot
- 1Free spins can be re-triggered during the free spins round. Better yet, you get the same number of additional spins as you did on the initial trigger.
- 2If you have multiple Wilds on screen with more than one multiplier, only the highest multiplier applies.
- 3Sadly, you can’t get more Wild Reels while the reels are re-spinning due to a Wild Reel moving from left to right.
PAYOUTS
There are 8 regular symbols in this game, so the hit rate is quite strong despite the small number of ways to win.
The various card symbols, ranging from Jacks to Aces, are low-paying. They are also presented as staple Diner foods. For instance, the Q for Queen is what looks to be a bagel burger, which is just adorable.
High-paying symbols include 50s artefacts like jukeboxes, classic cars, and more.
As a side note, the paytable presents payouts as multipliers of your bet per payline. It’s an old-school way of calculating things, so don’t be confused by the fact that low-paying symbols seem to cash out 10x your bet for just 3 matching symbols. They don’t. Since there are 10 paylines, you need to divide that number by ten to get your actual payout. As such, a win presented as 10x is actually 1x your stake, meaning it just returns your investment.
Still, American Diner slot RTP sits at a respectable 96.12%. You’ll have to rely on the Wilds to get the really big wins, but they hit quite often as well.
what we like
- Fun theme and great graphics
- Stunning attention to detail
- Powerful Wild Reels that hit quite often
what we don’t like
- Poorly explained features and payouts
AMERICAN DINER (DRAGON GAMING): CASINO BLOKE’S VERDICT
To be frank, the only real issue we had with this game is not the game itself. It’s how Dragon Gaming chose to explain it. For example, the info panel seems to imply that Wilds and Wild Reels are not the same things, but we never actually encountered a Wild symbol that didn’t cover the whole reel. The coin-per-payline payout structure is a bit weird in this day and age, but we can’t say that this is the only game that does it either.
We refuse to end on a sour note, though. Our impressions of American Diner by Dragon Gaming are overwhelmingly positive. We adored the carefully constructed theme and enjoyed our time with the game, which seems to hit all the right beats it was aiming for.
The gameplay is fun in and of itself, but the looks and theme really elevate the experience to a new level. We were surprised to find that this is one of our favourite Dragon Gaming slots to date, and we feel like the aesthetics alone make it unique and memorable.
